Axes and Tools

Bearded Axe with Yew handle

I used a leaf spring for the head and carved the handle from Yew free hand. I carved it to fit my hand half way up and at the bottom.

Hand Axe

I found the head and scaled down a felling axe handle in Yew. I was pleased to get the white sap wood both on the heel and the toe.

Hook knife

Made to fit my palm at the bottom and long for two hands. I made the blade removable so I don’t have to make so many handles. Blade made from hedge cutter blades

Draw knife

Made with a Yew handle.

Bearded Axe Mk 2

A small pickaxe modified to be my work axe. The handle is Yew and it’s great that it is removable.

  Chainsaw Bandsaw

My attempt at making a small bandsaw as all mobile sawmills are too big for domestic garden use. Made from the biggest chainsaw I’ve got with moped wheels added to make the chainsaw into a bandsaw. I always thought it was a shame I made so many logs out of Customers’ trees instead of planking the wood and turning it into lumber.

  Clogging Knife

Was shown how to use a Clogging Knife at Hartpury College. They don’t appear to be popular, so I made my own, and they are very satisfying to carve with.

  Hollowing Axe

Axe head constructed from a large bearing. Yew handle turned out to be the best part of this Axe as the branch hook at the bottom of the handle is very comfortable to use.

  Medium sized Axe

Axe head constructed from a leaf spring. The handle was created from Apple wood. The handle looks good and feels nice to hold, but it doesn’t work well.

  Ring tool

Made from a ring spanner with a Yew handle to carve the bowl for a spoon.

  Throwing Axe

Axe head constructed from leaf springs. Handle is temporary and made from a pickaxe handle with a brass removal wedge. I got carried away in lock-down and made it too big, too heavy and the bottom spikes dangerously close to your fingers and arms. It is a real beast so probably won’t make a handle for it. Will start again.
